1. Jesus calls a tax collector (Mark 2.13–14).
2. Jesus eats with sinners (verses 15–16).
3. Jesus challenges the self-righteous (verse 17).
Reflection Questions
1. Levi was a total outsider, distrusted by his own people. Why do you think Jesus chose to call him, of all people, to follow?
2. Discipleship can be described as ‘you leave, and you follow.’ Is there something in your life right now that’s hard to leave behind, or a new way you’re learning to follow?
3. Jesus wasn’t just tolerating the ‘sinners and tax collectors’ at Levi’s table; he was reclining, relaxed, at home among them. What’s the difference between tolerating someone and truly welcoming them?
4. Who are the people in your school, workplace, or friend group who might seem like today’s ‘sinners and tax collectors’? What would it look like for you to welcome / make space for them this week?
5. Jesus says he came for the sick, not the healthy (for sinners, not the righteous). Why might it actually be harder to come to Jesus when you think you’ve got life sorted?
6. The sermon calls the church to be a ‘paramedic-church,’ not just a healing place people come to, but people who go out to where others are hurting. What’s one step you could take this week to be like that, at home, school, or work?
